Membership of the WCGS

Joining WCGS involves more than just becoming a player in the orchestra: it opens up our experience as musicians and community members.

Paul and Steve

Eye contact is easy when you have eyes in the back of your head.

The society aims to advance the art and science of the instrument and players in groups such as ours make a big difference in bringing the art into the public domain by providing the framework for amateur participation in events produced to professional standards, and a support base for all levels, amateur and pro alike.   WCGS is part of a relatively small number of guitar societies in the UK and we are working all the time, to build ties with other similar groups in a spirit of co-operation and mutual support.   Our members come from all walks of life but they are all bound by a passionate interest in the instrument, it music and its traditions.

Joan takes a well-deserved tea break

Enjoying a well-deserved break.

As well as performing in public concerts with the orchestra, there are plenty of opportunities for the aspiring soloist to flex their performance muscles in the hour long sessions after the main rehearsal.   Members looking for a little feedback or extra tuition, find this part of the session provides the ideal opportunity to present pieces in a more intimate workshop setting.   With the kettle on, everyone finds this is an ideal point to catch up with friends, kick back and relax.

Performing in the orchestra can be quite different to the soloist’s mindset that many of us have developed in the course of our playing careers: playing in a group requires a different kind of listening and playing but the benefits are tangible.   Regular rehearsals mean that our members tend to practice more and as a result, find it easier to keep on top of their playing.   The orchestra is a great place to meet other players though and many musical partnerships have been formed from its ranks.

Around concert time, it is likely you will be asked if you can help distribute posters and flyers and occasionally there may be front of house roles that need filling, which can be a great way to catch a show for free.   Concert attendance for visiting artists is not mandatory but membership means you will be able entitled to reduced rates on tickets in appreciation of your support.
