Expert guidance is always on hand.
Members enter the orchestra at all levels of ability and all are welcome. Members join a section, and each section has its own leader. The leaders of the sections are expert level players who are there to guide and advise the players through technical and performance issues. The leader also ensures a level of uniformity in the sound their section produces.
No prior experience of playing in a group is required and we do not audition candidates as an entry requirement. You will need to be able to read music in order to play in the orchestra but scores are usually issued well in advance of a rehearsal allowing you plenty of time to get familiar with your part. As well as providing you with the printed scores, our own arrangements are frequently supplemented by recorded demos of the music and these can provide a useful learning aid.
The entry level of ability required does change across the parts and so if you are interested in joining the orchestra the first step is to get in touch with us so that we can discuss your experience and your needs as a musician. We will ensure that you enter a section suited to your ability.
The equipment you will need is all standard: a nylon-strung guitar in a case to prevent damage, a foot stool or any of the other methods of elevating the playing position of the instrument, a music stand, and a pencil. A tuner is also advised but there is plenty of help on hand with tuning if you ever need it.
The current annual membership fee is £30, due in January.
