Society concerts
The New Artist's Scheme series goes from strength to strength with three professional concerts planned up to 2011.
Danielle Saxon Reeves and Mark Willets known collectively as Dodici Corde, will be giving a Romantic programme in April on a pair of exquisite period guitars; Mark owns an 1832 Panormo and Danielle plays a French Guitar made c1840.
Then in July, William Browne will be presenting his homage to Julian Bream, the programme is a compelling portrait of Bream’s life told in music through pieces especially written for him and pieces which he made unequivocally, his own.
We round the year off with the Duo Transatlantique, featuring Maud Laforest and Benjamin Beirs; the sensational Franco-American duo being hailed as the new Presti and Lagoya who will be giving their first major tour of the UK in the autumn and we are lucky to be one of the first to host them in concert.
The Society as usual, will also be mounting two concerts of its own. The summer concert just before the holidays, is the main showcase for the WCGO and for the various senior soloists and smaller ensembles offering their latest and greatest musical accomplishments. Spanish music makes a welcome return with the WCGO programme this summer and some rather special solo’s are in preparation.
The end of autumn concert held around November, also features the WCGO and spots for the seniors, but they are joined by the WYGO in what is traditionally the biggest concert of the year. A real family event, we encourage all ages to come along to this one. This concert’s theme is English Music and we are hoping to combine WYGO and the WCGO in one enormous ensemble for a magical performance of ‘Watersmeet’ by one of England’s greatest contemporary composers, Stephen Dodgson.
All of our concerts are free to the under 16's.
Emanuele Segre
The WCGS is teaming up with Derby Classical Guitar Society to put on a workshop from Italian virtuoso, Emanuele Segre in May.
"Segre creates an unbelievable atmosphere with the guitar ...This lyrical quality created by Emanuele Segre, who with exquisite ease knows how to distil the most diverse works by different composers through a filter of rich sensitivity, catching the minute detail... Above all, the fine art of details shows a highly intelligent interpretation as well as an exciting virtuosity, that Segre entirely devotes to enhancing every single nuance of the musical discourse"
Il Resto del Carlino (Italy)
Neil Smith and Štěpán Rak
Štěpán Rak will be flying over to the UK and joining Neil Smith in duo in May. Watch this space for forthcoming details.
