The senior and junior members of the society return in the traditional annual review with a programme that reflects the great diversity of interest within the society. The WCGO continue on their musical expedition with a group of picturesque pieces from the musical map of the world: from Asia to the New World taking in several central European cultures en route.
A chance to hear these pieces live before the WCGO goes into the recording studio with them in December. The WYGO meanwhile, will be performing an alternative tongue-in-cheek programme that includes the theme music from Wallace and Gromit ‘Curse of the Were-rabbit’ and ‘The Good the Bad and the Ugly’.
Joining the WCGO and the WYGO this year, we have Natasha Miles, Jake Brooks, Tim Phillips performing a fine selection of solos. Natasha will be performing Tarrega’s famous ‘Capricho Arabe’, a piece which spawned a whole generation of classical guitarists and which helped to immortalise the sound of the Spanish guitar in many people’s hearts. Jake will be playing a Spanish concert fantasy from the same (late Romantic) period as Tarrega, the ‘Catalán’ by Brocá and a musical export, the ‘Mazurka Chôro’ by the Brazilian Villa-Lobos. Jorge Morel has written some brilliant pieces for the guitar in the Brazilian tradition and Tim Phillips will be playing two of his finest compositions to date. The music director, Stephen Begley will also be contributing – see programme for details.
