Elegiac, Capricious, Sublime...
Monika Týmlová’s programme spanning three centuries is a celebration of guitar music that goes right to the heart of what a virtuoso performance is all about.
Evergreen works by Scarlatti, Giuliani, Mertz and de Falla that have become firmly established as masterpieces in the guitar canon are represented together with contemporary works from living master guitarist-composers: Nikita Koshkin, Roland Dyens, Carlo Domeniconi and our very own Hayley Savage.
Revealing the Spanish classical guitar in all its moods, the finely balanced programme takes in the sublime emotional depths alongside precipitous displays of athleticism, hot-blooded vitality and ephemeral beauty all delivered with a depth of understanding, worthy of the masters themselves.
A powerful combination of style and substance... Unmissable.
Concert review
Monika Týmlová gave a phenomenal debut performance at the Worcester Arts Workshop on Saturday evening which included a virtuoso account of Domeniconi's 'Koyunbaba' drawing admiring comments from many who were present - "She makes the guitar sound like an orchestra" and "astonishing!" were just a couple of the remarks we heard. Monika was joined in the final part of the show by her partner Jiří Sladkovský for Hayley Savage's 'Dodecaphonica', a tour de force for guitar duet that created a fitting finale to an inspirational programme.
Monika's concert was the fifth in the New Artist's Scheme, a scheme for new artists and artists with new programme ideas developed by Hayley Savage and the WCGS music director, Stephen Begley.
Monika is in her final year at the Birmingham Conservatoire and on the strength of the content of this programme and the immense technical ability that she brought to the concert platform, we are convinced a bright and rosy future awaits her.
